Classic Line Development History

The Classic Line began with a request. A company came to us after running a different VESC that simply hadn't lived up to expectations. They had a project on the table — converting a vehicle to a brushless drive — and needed a controller to make it work. The brief was refreshingly clear: the lightest, most cost-effective ESC we could build, and one that wouldn't depend on an expensively milled aluminum heatsink to stay cool. That first controller became the M-Classic, and it gave the entire line its name.

From the M-Classic grew the M-Neo. The motivation was straightforward: we wanted phase-current sensing for tighter, more precise monitoring of the motor. The Neo kept the proven capabilities of the Classic almost unchanged while adding that extra layer of insight — and it was designed to be NDAA-compliant from the outset, opening the door to more demanding and regulated applications.

As interest in the platform grew, so did the controllers themselves. The L-Classic was developed for a manufacturer serving the luxury jetboard sector, which funded its development directly. The L quickly found its place in tow buggies of all kinds: pulling students through their first wing-foiling lessons, and powering applications ranging from paragliders to scooters.

The XL had, in a sense, been in the works the longest — its design even predates our own partnership. It grew out of a simple, recurring thought: a few more amps would be nice. We kept nudging the design a little further, again and again, until we finally stopped deliberating and simply ordered a batch. The very first test pulled 1100 A of phase current. Since then, the XL has gone on to power a variety of different projects both internally and for customers.

Across the entire Classic Line, the philosophy has stayed the same: lightweight, cost-effective hardware that doesn't rely on exotic cooling. They are all built on the open and transparent VESC® firmware. From the simple M-Classic to the high-current XL-Classic, every controller shares the same DNA — proven, configurable, and ready for real-world use.
