Rugged Line Development History
Around three years ago, while benchmarking motor controllers from different manufacturers for a customer project, the controllers from FarDriver stood out to us. Compared with the alternatives, their hardware was surprisingly powerful, robust, and capable. In terms of raw performance, they had a good deal to offer.
For this project, we explored whether these controllers could be used in go-kart applications. From a hardware perspective, they appeared to be a strong candidate. However, in practice, it became clear that they were not configurable enough for the level of control, repeatability, and application-specific tuning we required. Important settings were difficult to access, parameterization was inconsistent, configuration apps expiring randomly, etc. Even basic setup tasks were unnecessarily difficult, documentation was limited, and the overall user experience made the controllers nearly impossible to configure in a professional and repeatable manner. The software represented a major obstacle.
As a result, we decided not to pursue the platform further at that time. Nevertheless, the core concept remained interesting to us. The strong power stage, rugged housings, and cost-efficient production stayed in the back of our minds.
Around the summer of 2025, during an internal creative session on future product ideas, the FarDriver platform came up again. By then, we had gained substantial experience retrofitting and adapting complicated PCBs for customers across a different projects. That experience gave us a better understanding of how to take existing hardware, overcome its limitations, and turn it into a reliable and practical product.
With this additional know-how, we decided to revisit the FarDriver concept and pursue it more seriously. Rather than continuing to work around the shortcomings of the original software, we developed a way to modify the existing FarDriver logic boards and make the controllers true VESCs®. This approach allowed us to combine the proven mechanical and power-stage design of the FarDriver controllers with the flexibility, transparency, and configurability of the VESC ecosystem.
What began as a prototype was gradually developed into a fully functioning product.
The result is the Rugged Line you see today. Built into proven housings, supported by an established supply chain, and offered at competitive prices.
